All exercises begin with firing of transverse abdominis (TA) and the Stabilizer monitors this position.
Patients sometimes do too much during their first visit and are sore the next day. Be conservative that first day.
Evidence-based research: There are several studies on the beneficial effects of aquatic therapy on those with low back pain.
When standing chest deep in water, the body is 80% weightless, bearing only 20% of its weight. This weightlessness helps with exercises and movements that could otherwise be too difficult.
Because the water is a thicker medium than air, by moving in the water the amount of resistance from the water can range from 4 to 44 times that of air. Using the resistance of the water in exercise is like exercising with weights or machines on land, but safer.
In chest deep water, approximately 90% of your body weight is buoyant, therefore you really are bearing only 10% of your weight when you exercise. Exercise in the water is much safer an your joints and muscles; virtually stress-free.
The water temperature is the same all year long. You do not need to contend with the variability of the elements; heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.
The hydrostatic pressure; the pressure of the water on your body, joints, muscles and internal organs, massages and comforts your body while you exercise. You never feel fatigued.
Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
Great experience. Always felt motivated to work my hardest and knew that the therapists were truly caring about my recovery.
I almost didn’t come back after the first week of therapy because the pain was so bad but I’m so glad I did. My experience was so good with all of the therapy assistants. I felt they were very caring.
It was amazing that I walked in with such pain and weakness that I thought I was going to be on disability and the next step was a wheelchair. After 18 weeks of work with the trainers, I feel that I have a new expectation that I can do anything.
Overall a very positive experience. The staff has been very professional and have provided me with not just therapy, but a method to continue my work outside the center. All the exercises provided have been such that they can be integrated into my normal workout routine. This should allow me to work on any problems on my own in the future. I have been very pleased with the progress I made and with the program.
I was a good experience at learning new abilities. It made me a lot stronger and I fell like it made a better athlete. In basketball a lot. I thought I was a lot of help for me.
Very professional and kind people who answered each question I had throughout the Low Back Program
Excellent…no problems….they worked with me on scheduling which was very important to me
it was good. everyone was very nice and helped me a lot with my ankles. thinks guys, I am feeling great!
I feel that I have gotten stronger and I have learned what me weak areas are. I also think that I have learned some things that I need to avoid.
Exceptional will be my word. First thing that comes in my mind.
